Golden Gloves: A History of Boxing in South Texas
GOLDEN GLOVES: A HISTORY OF BOXING IN SOUTH TEXAS chronicles the history of boxing in South Texas from the late 1950s until the early 1980s. During that time period boxing was incredibly popular in the area, and numerous sophisticated gyms with knowledgeable trainers sprang up to meet the demand. Boys as young as ten years old went into training programs and competed in the Golden Gloves, an amateur boxing competition. Champions developed in this environment, and some of them became professional boxers. The program focuses on three boxers: Porfirio "Blackie" Zamora, Humberto "Lefty" Barrera, and Jesse Benavides. It also includes the viewpoints of trainers, who endeavored to become a positive force in the community.
