Sink Your Shucks, May 4 & May 11 (Call for Volunteers)
The oyster recycling program Sink Your ShucksTM, founded by the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies (HRI) at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2009, is celebrating its 15th anniversary with two oyster bagging events, Saturday, May 4, and Saturday, May 11, at Goose Island State Park.
Community volunteers are invited to return reclaimed oyster shells from local restaurants and into local waters to provide substrates to form new reefs and habitats for fish, crabs, and other organisms. Sink Your ShucksTM is led by the Coastal Conservation and Restoration group with assistance from the Texas Surf Conservancy.
Since the program’s inception, over 3 million pounds of shell has been collected and over 45 acres of oyster reef habitat has been restored throughout the Mission-Aransas Estuary in Copano, Aransas, and St. Charles Bays.
