DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sylvia Chan-Malik\, a scholar of American studies\, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies\, and Women's and Gender Studies and Assistant Professor at Rutgers University\, will headline the spring 2018 Humanities Speaker Series at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The Humanities Speaker Series\, sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi\, will take place on Thursday\, March 22\, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the University Center\, Anchor Ballroom. Chan-Malik will talk about her book\, "Being Muslim: A Cultural History of Women of Color in American Islam\," which explores how Islam re-emerged within the African American community in the 1920's. The book talk is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nThe Humanities Speaker Series is an annual event that brings to campus speakers who engage with issues that cross disciplines within\, and beyond\, the Humanities. Funded by the Office of Research\, Commercialization and Outreach\, the series also provides the opportunity for a small group of scholars at TAMU-CC to work together on an enduring question or theme within the Humanities.
